Self Charging Mobile Phone sounds fantastic to me. This new technology is developed by UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science researches. UCLA Engineering team has invented a polarizing organic photovoltaic for LCD screen that can boost the LCD's function to work as a polarizer, photocoltaic device and ambient light / sunlight photovoltaic panel. The LCD screens that built-in with photovoltaic polarizers will allow the electronic devices to convert ambient light, sunlight and their own backlight into electricity to charge the battery. This is how the energy recycles. Professor Yang says that this would be the future for technology not only for mobile phones but also for other electronic devices too.
Currently, nokia and samsung are working on it to develope a mobile phone that can be charged by itself. However, nokia system is to collect energy from ambient radio waves emitted by antennas, TV masts and Wi-Fi transmitters. The antenna and the receiver circuit will be used to pick up a wide range of frequencies from 500 megahertz to 10 gigahertz then convert the electromagnetic waves into an electrical current. Then the second circuit will feed this current to the battery to recharge it. This mobile phone will be in market in three to five years.
